Common Boneset - Eupatorium perfoliatum

Boneset, Eupatorium perfoliatum, is a large, clump-forming, native, perennial wildflower that is closely related to the Joe-Pye-weeds, and can grow up to 6″ tall, but typically is around 4″. The lance-shaped, highly textured leaves clasp the upright stem and were once thought to help facilitate the setting and healing of bones, thus its common name. The dried leaves have also been used to make a tonic, boneset tea, thought effective in treating colds, coughs, and constipation. The root system produces rhizomes in abundance and Boneset typically forms vegetative colonies. This species thrives in rich soil that remains consistently moist, and prefers full sun though it will tolerate partial shade. Beginning in June and continuing through October, fuzzy clusters of tiny, white flowers or corymbs are arranged at the top of the 3-6″ stems. The clusters have a pleasant floral scent and are highly attractive to pollinators.
