Common Witch hazel, Hamamelis virginiana, is a large shrub native to woodlands in Eastern North America. It typically grows 15 to 20 feet tall and wide in the forest understory. Leaves turn an attractive golden yellow in autumn and are typically followed by frilly clusters of yellow flowers from October to December. An unusual late bloomer, American Witch hazel is often the last plant to bloom before winter. Berries develop over a long period before bursting the following autumn. Best grown in part shade with ample moisture.
