Florida Anise (Illicium floridanum), also known as Purple Anise, is a striking evergreen shrub native to the southeastern United States, particularly thriving in the moist, shaded woodlands of Florida and the Gulf Coast. This plant is known for its aromatic, glossy, dark green leaves and star-shaped, maroon to deep red flowers that bloom in spring. The flowers are fragrant, emitting a sweet, anise-like scent that attracts bees and other pollinators.

Florida Anise thrives in partial shade to full shade and prefers consistently moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. It is an excellent choice for shaded gardens, woodland settings, and areas with moist soil, such as near streams or ponds. The plant is also deer-resistant, adding to its suitability for naturalistic and wildlife-friendly gardens.

Ecologically, Florida Anise supports local pollinators. Its nectar-rich flowers are particularly attractive to bees, providing an essential food source during its bloom period. The dense, evergreen foliage offers shelter and habitat for various small animals and insects, contributing to the biodiversity of the garden.

In landscaping, Florida Anise is valued for its unique flowers, fragrant foliage, and adaptability to shaded, moist conditions. It can be used as a specimen plant, in mixed borders, or as part of a naturalized woodland garden. Its evergreen nature ensures year-round interest and structure in the garden. By incorporating Florida Anise into your landscape, you can enjoy its beautiful, fragrant flowers, support pollinators, and enhance the ecological diversity of your garden.
