Golden Alexanders, Zizia aurea, is a native perennial that blooms with golden clusters 3 – 4″ umbels in May and June. The blooms sit above deep green, leathery basal foliage, which reaches 24 – 30″ in height and can spread up to 4′ in width. In the wild, this plant forms small colonies in woodland areas and moist, shady meadows. Being so, Golden Alexander thrives in consistently moist to wet, well-drained soils in full to partial shade. A significant pollinator source in the wild, it also serves as the larval host plant for Missouri Woodland Swallowtail, Black Swallowtail, and Ozark Swallowtail butterflies.
