- Attractive to bees and butterflies
Lyreleaf Sage, Salvia lyrata ‘Purple Knockout’, is a strictly upright, hairy perennial wildflower, 1-2′ tall with a rosette of basal evergreen leaves. Square-stemmed with 2-lipped blossoms characteristic of mints, its tubular pale-blue to violet flowers are arranged in whorls around the stem forming an uninterrupted terminal spike, with 1″ long blossoms. Grown mainly for the foliage, the ‘Purple Knockout’ cultivar has compact basal rosettes of shiny burgundy leaves that turn to deep purple in summer, then to red in fall. Very easy to grow in just about any soil type, it will self sow to spread and become a dense groundcover that makes a great substitute for non-native groundcovers.
