Shrub Yellowroot - Xanthorhiza simplicissima
-
Xanthorhiza simplicissima, Shrub Yellowroot, is an easily grown American native that prefers shade to part shade in average to moist sandy-loam soils, though it will tolerate an upland clay soil. Small terminal clusters of star shaped brownish-purple flowers appear in early spring generally beneath the foliage. Mature height of 1-3 feet can be expected depending on the amount of light received, therefore there will be more height in heavier shade. In the fall of the year, Shrub Yellowroot’s delicate, lacey foliage will turn golden yellow and purplish colors. This plant is held in high regard by herbalists for its valued medicinal properties. Plants spread readily through underground rhizomes. Grows well planted with shade-loving plants such as native ferns, trilliums, and green and gold.
