Smooth Blue Aster - Aster laevis or Symphyotrichum laevae
-
Symphyotrichum laevae, commonly called Smooth Aster, is a North American native typically occurring in prairies, roadside fields, or dry open woods. The violet blue to purple rays and yellow center disk flowers are .75 to 1.25” across. Smooth Asters bloom in the fall of the year and are excellent butterfly attractors. Use them in a border combined with sunflowers and golden rod for a wonderful fall show of color. Asters prefer a sunny location and are tolerant of a range of soil types as long as the soil will dry from time to time.
