Virginia Bluebells, Mertensia virginica, is a perennial wildflower native to the Eastern half of the United States and Canada. A spring ephemeral, Virginia Bluebells emerges in early spring with large, lush, green leaves followed by clusters of showy blue flowers. The plant goes dormant by midsummer until the following spring. Virginia Bluebells commonly grows in rich, moist woods and river floodplains. Naturalize in wooded areas or shady wildflower gardens. Overplant with ferns or other perennials to maintain interest once Virginia Bluebells goes dormant in summer.
