Virginia Sweetspire, Itea virginica, is a small shrub native to moist areas of the Eastern United States. Virginia Sweetspire typically grows in low woods, swamps, and along stream banks. Adequate moisture should be provided if planted outside its natural habitat. The shrub grows 3 to 4 feet tall and wide and produces beautiful, fragrant, white flowers in spring. The flowers are highly attractive to butterflies and other pollinators. Virginia Sweetspire also has beautiful fall color, showing a range of reds, yellows, and oranges.
