Description
Liatris spicata, Blazing Star, is easily grown in full sun with average to medium well drained soils. This species is a tall upright, clump forming native perennial maturing to 3-4′ in height, sometimes reaching up to 6′. Terminal spikes of rounded, fluffy, deep purple flowers appear atop rigid stems borne from clumps of grass-like basal foliage. Liatris is an important source of nectar for many of our butterflies. Mass liatris in perennial borders or natural gardens for a brilliant show of color in mid summer.
