Description
Salvia azurea, or Blue Sage, is a clump-forming perennial that typically grows 3 – 5′ tall in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Though it tolerates drought, it thrives in moist, gravelly or sandy soils with good drainage. Whorls of 2-lipped, azure blue flowers bloom in spikes from mid-summer to fall atop stems with linear to lanceolate grayish-green leaves (3 – 4″ long). The showy flowers are a favorite of butterflies and the occasional hummingbird from July through October. Salvia azurea is tough as nails and is an excellent choice for dry sites.
