Aquilegia canadensis or Red Columbine is an easily-grown self-seeding native that prefers average, well drained soil in full sun to partial shade. The flowers of our native Columbine have red sepals with yellow petals and distinctive red spurs. When finished flowering, the foliage, if planted in mass, will provide a nice ground cover effect. Columbine works well in open, shaded gardens and borders. We like to combine it with ferns and larkspur.
