Red Trillium, or Trillium Erectum, is a beautiful spring ephemeral that grows best under deciduous hardwoods in rich, humus-filled soil. The plant emerges in the early spring before the trees have leafed out to take advantage of this brief window of warmer temperatures and ample sunlight. Rich green leaves are followed by showy red flowers, resembling the flowers of lillies. Bloom time lasts for 2 to 3 weeks and is followed by berry-like fruit. Red trillium then returns to dormancy in the summer until the following spring. Trillium provides a fantastic burst of color in the early spring before most other flowers are blooming. Plant with other woodland perennials such as ferns and golden seal.
